Sight word reading is particularly useful for those all-important and frequently used words which can be hard or tricky to sound out or spell phonetically. Developing an instant recognition of these words will give your child's reading a boost and help them to gain confidence and fluency. Learning the words from flashcards or lists can be a bit boring or mundane, so using games whether interactive or hands-on will help children to have fun and learn sight words almost effortlessly. Sight words are also sometimes called high frequency words, Dolch words, or Fry words. Below you will find Power Points that review words that were compiled by Edward William Dolch, PhD. There are about 220 words that are most commonly found in everyday reading. Once you click on the download file link, start the power point by going to slide show tab and click the tab labeled from beginning. Click the space bar to begin the words to flash one at a time on the screen for about 2 seconds. Press the space bar to move to the next word. The flashing of the words helps to assess that the child is recognizing the word and not decoding or sounding the word. Quick recognition of sight words will assist children in gaining fluency in reading. In addition, I've provided some links for you and your child to explore and practice reading sight words. Enjoy!
